What is Internet Of Things

Updated: Sep 20

The number of interconnected devices is 3 times more than the total human population and that is all due to the internet of things. That number is expected to grow rapidly over the period. Many huge corporations are investing a huge sum of money in IoT. The Internet of Things market size is expected to rise to a staggering $457 billion by 2020.

What is the Internet of Things? The concept of the internet of things (IoT meaning) is simple. It is basically the network of interconnected devices, such as bulbs, vehicles, home appliances, software, and so on that are able to connect, interact, and share data with each other.

Every single smart device has some sort of sensors attached to it. These sensors help devices to collect real-time data from the existing environment. For the purpose of connecting with other smart devices, it makes use of the internet. These devices upload its data to the cloud via devices, such as satellite, Bluetooth, WiFi, and so on. The bandwidth varies according to devices.

The software comes into play now for processing a massive amount of data collected and uploaded by IoT devices. The data processing also varies on the applications of devices. It could be as simple as reading a temperature to performing complicated tasks like making use of computer vision for object identification.

Finally, the end-user comes into play. The end-user is offered with a user interface to see what is going on with their smart devices. They can use the mobile app or a web browser for checking out video feeds and complicated analytical information. For a simpler purpose, one can make use of alerts like email alerts, SMS alerts, and so on.

You can fully automate the actions of your smart devices or manually approve the actions. It depends on the tasks that your smart devices perform.

It has touched both personal and professional lives. Many businesses use this technology to get real-time data about their inventories and manufacturing process. The volume of data has massively increased because of the pace at which IoT devices collect their information.

The productivity of many organizations have increased thanks to the integration of IoT devices. They have been able to get unique insights, which was not possible without IoT. Employers are able to monitor their staff properly for improving productivity.

The future of this technology is bright. We have only seen a small drop of what this technology is capable of achieving. The number of interconnected devices will rise to above 75 billion in 2025. The IoT devices will penetrate deeper into more industries like healthcare, various services, and many manufacturing sectors.

Scientists are likely to come up with advanced sensors that could change the entire business model of an organization. Those who do not utilize the massive potential of IoT will lag behind their competitors. With increased investment in IoT, we will not only see improved IoT systems, but it will also be affordable for smaller businesses. We can see how AI and machine learning is now affordable to small businesses. It will be similar for IoT.
